Prevalence of oral lesions in HIV patients related to CD4 cell count and viral load in a Venezuelan population

2006

Backgroud: A considerable number of gastrointestinal disorders (GIDs) of varied nature (inflammatory, infectious, genetic and other etiology) may produce alterations in the hard and soft oral tissues. Among these are Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, celiac and gastroesophageal reflux disease. Material and Methods: Article search was done using the National library of medicine (PubMed) database using different search terms and analyzed according to their importance. Results: A large variety of GIDs can give rise to oral lesions, including: RAS like ulceration, mucosal tags, cobblestoning, mucogingivitis, labial and facial swelling, pyostomatitis vegetans, disgeusia an…

Neuronavigation-guided biopsy for differential diagnosis of pseudotumoral demyelinating brain lesions

2014

Abstract Marburg's disease (MD) is an extremely rare and aggressive form of multiple sclerosis (MS). In some cases, MD presents with tumefactive demyelinating lesions with a “tumor-like” appearance in MRI images, for which it may be difficult to achieve a form of differential diagnosis between definitive tumors or abscesses. Here we report a case of MD histopathologically confirmed after neuronavigationguided biopsy. Postoperative course was uneventful and following discharge, the patient attended outpatient follow-up appointments and received i.v. cyclophopsphamide, achieving progressive clinical remission. A nine-month follow-up brain MRI scan with gadolinium showed no signs of progressin…

Second Opinion System for Intraoral Lesions

2014

In this paper we present the prototype of a teledentistry system to perform the remote diagnosis of oral diseases. It makes use of a particular device called intra-oral (or dental) camera properly designed to shoot video and take pictures of the inner part of the mouth. The intra-oral cameras can be connected via USB to a common PC and they are very cheap, unlike the intra-oral photography kit for DSLR cameras. Usually this kind of devices are used in dentistry studies for local visualization by means of specialized software. The novelty of our system is that the real-time video produced by this device is canalized into a video streming by means of Video LAN client server (VLC) and pictures…

LESIONI ORALI E CERVICALI ASSOCIATE A PAPILLOMA VIRUS UMANO

2009

The aim of this review is to carry out a quick excursus on the epidemiological and clinical aspect of oral and cervical lesions induced by human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and on the way this virus is transmitted. HPV infection is transmitted above all through vaginal or anal sexual relations with partners carrying the virus. Also other types of sexual relations, such as oral sex, can be a vehicle of transmission, though much more rarely. In literature there is not enough data proving that oral-genital contact can really be a vehicle of transmission for human papillomavirus. It can be concluded, therefore, that evidences in further studies with a large sample group of patients who pract…

Systematic mapping review of interventions to prevent blood loss, infection and relapse in orthognathic surgery

2023

This systematic mapping review aims to identify, describe, and organize the currently available evidence in systematic reviews (SR) and primary studies regarding orthognathic surgery (OS) co-interventions and surgical modalities, focusing on the outcomes blood loss, infection and relapse. A comprehensive search strategy was performed to identify all SRs, randomized controlled trials and observational studies that evaluate surgical modalities and perioperative co-interventions in OS that evaluate the outcomes blood loss, infection and relapse, regardless of language or publication date. Searches were conducted in MEDLINE, EMBASE, Epistemonikos, Lilacs, Web of Science, and CENTRAL. In additio…

Oral Blue Nevus: Case Report

2016

Abstract: Aim of this research is the description of a case of palatal blue nevus and the diagnostic and therapeutic strategies to adopt when this oral lesion occurs. Nevi are benign proliferations of nevus cells either in the epithelium or in the subepithelial stroma. Blue nevus of the oral mucosa is a rare lesion. The oral blue nevi are asymptomatic and have no malignant potential. More importantly blue nevus had to be differentiated from malignant melanoma. Because is difficult to distinguish oral melanocytic nevi from melanoma we believe that any oral lesion in question should be excised and sent for histopathologic evaluation.
